What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how well AI assistants know your brand and how often they name it when someone asks for a recommendation. It covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and the AI summaries inside Google Search.
Search used to hand people ten links and let them choose. An assistant often skips that step: it names two or three companies and explains why. If you are one of them, you get the click and the trust. If you are not, the buyer may never learn you exist.
Assistants do not invent opinions about brands. They draw on encyclopedic records, news coverage, community discussion and the pages they can crawl. If those sources describe you clearly and often, you are far more likely to be named.
Plain honesty. Nobody outside an AI company can see how often its assistant mentions a brand, and asking the assistants directly needs paid access. So this free tool measures the sources they learn from, which is the part you can actually influence. It is an estimate, and it comes with questions you can ask the assistants yourself.
How to check your AI visibility
- Enter your website. A domain such as yourbrand.com works best because we can check your site as well as your name.
- Add competitors (optional, up to five) to compare your public footprint side by side.
- Add what you sell (optional) so the test questions at the end match your category.
- Press Check AI visibility. We read Wikipedia, Wikidata, recent news, Hacker News, the Internet Archive and your own site. It takes up to 30 seconds.
- Read the report, then test it. Open the suggested questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google to see whether you are actually named.
No signup and no API key. Nothing you enter is stored.
What is in your AI visibility report
| Part of the report | Source | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Score by assistant | All of the below | An estimate for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Each weights the signals differently and loses points if its own crawlers are blocked on your site. |
| Knowledge sources (40%) | Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikipedia page views | Whether you have an encyclopedic record and how much people read it. Models learn heavily from these. |
| Web and news (35%) | News index, Hacker News, Internet Archive | How much recent coverage you get, its tone, how long you have been online and which sites write about you. |
| Your website (25%) | Your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap, llms.txt | Whether AI crawlers can enter, and whether your identity is clear in structured data. |
| Competitor analysis | Wikipedia and Hacker News | Your footprint next to rivals, measured the same way for everyone. |
| Test questions | You, in the assistants | What ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI actually say. |
Brand awareness uses four levels: Iconic, Well-known, Recognized and Emerging / Unknown. If a source cannot be reached, it is skipped and the other weights are scaled up.
How to read your scores
70 and above
Strong footprint. Independent sources describe you clearly and often. Keep facts current and protect it.
40 to 69
Building. You are known in places but thin in others. The weakest of the three cards shows where to work.
Below 40
Emerging. Models have little to learn from. Earn independent coverage and make your identity clear.
Look at the three cards before the total. A software brand with a strong site but no news coverage needs press. A well-covered brand that blocks AI crawlers needs a robots.txt fix. The gap tells you the next move.
A new or small brand scoring low is normal, not a failure. Scores also move slowly, so re-check monthly and watch the direction.
Which AI assistants should you check?
Each assistant finds and chooses sources a little differently, so check the ones your buyers use.
| Assistant | How it tends to find sources | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Model knowledge plus live web search through its own search crawler. | Allow OAI-SearchBot, be described consistently across the web. |
| Perplexity | Searches the web for almost every question and shows numbered sources. | Allow PerplexityBot, publish pages that answer the question directly. |
| Gemini and Google AI | Google's index powers AI Overviews and AI Mode. | Normal SEO health, indexability and structured data. |
| Claude | Model knowledge, with web search where enabled. | Allow Claude-SearchBot, earn third-party descriptions. |
| Copilot | Built on Bing's index. | Bing indexing, Bing Webmaster Tools. |
These behaviours change often. Treat the table as a starting point and re-test rather than assuming.
Why your brand may not show up in AI answers
Crawlers are blocked
A blanket Disallow rule or a security setting can keep every AI crawler out. Our free robots.txt checker shows exactly which crawlers are blocked.
Your site is hard to read
If your text is built by JavaScript, most AI crawlers see an empty page. Server-rendered content solves it.
Nobody else describes you
Assistants lean heavily on third-party sources. A brand that only talks about itself looks unverified.
Your identity is unclear
Different names on your site, your profiles and your listings make it harder for a model to treat them as one company.
You do not answer the question
Pages that open with marketing language give an assistant nothing to quote. Direct answers get lifted.
You are simply new
Models need time and mentions to learn a small brand. That is normal, and it is fixable.
How to improve your AI search visibility
- Let answer crawlers in. Allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot in robots.txt.
- Say what you do in one plain sentence in the title, the H1 and the first paragraph.
- Mark up your organization. Add Organization JSON-LD with a logo, description and sameAs links to your real profiles.
- Publish answer pages. One page for each question buyers ask, opening with the answer and backed by facts, prices and a named author.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Review sites, industry lists, podcasts, partner pages and news coverage all feed what assistants say.
- Prove your claims. Cite data, show customer results and keep pages dated and current.
- Keep your story identical everywhere. Same name, same description, same category on every profile.
- Re-test monthly. Run the same questions and compare.
Do robots.txt and llms.txt affect AI visibility?
robots.txt matters a lot. It is the one file that every major AI crawler documents and respects. If it blocks a crawler, that assistant cannot fetch your pages to cite them.
Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot is a separate choice from blocking answer crawlers. You can opt out of training and still be cited, though models that never read your site learn about you only from others.
llms.txt is optional. It is a proposed plain-text guide to your best pages. The major assistants have not confirmed they use it, so publish one because it is cheap and may help, not because it is required. Our free LLMs.txt generator makes one in a minute.
AI visibility vs SEO
| SEO | AI visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in a list of links | Be named, quoted and linked inside an answer |
| Unit of success | Position and clicks | Mentions, citations and share of voice |
| What gets chosen | A whole page | A passage and a brand |
| Key signals | Links, relevance, speed | Clear facts, trusted third-party mentions, consistent identity |
| Stability | Fairly steady day to day | Varies between runs of the same question |
They work together. Google's AI features draw on its normal index, and clean technical SEO is also the base that other assistants rely on. Think of AI visibility as the next layer, not a replacement.
How to monitor AI mentions over time
Repeat the same questions on a schedule, keep the answers, and compare. A simple routine works well:
- Pick 10 to 15 questions and keep them fixed.
- Run the check every month, and test other assistants such as Perplexity by hand.
- Run the report here and note the score.
- Watch how often you are named in the recommendation tests, not just the total score.
- Note which sources the assistants cite when a competitor wins.
Once it becomes routine, PilotDeck can run it for you across assistants and countries and alert you when something changes.
AI visibility tool FAQ
What is an AI visibility tool?
It is a tool that shows how visible your brand is to AI assistants. This one measures the public sources they learn from, including Wikipedia, news coverage, community discussion and your own site, and gives you questions to test in the assistants.
Is the AI visibility tool free?
Yes. It is free, needs no signup and needs no API key.
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my brand?
Run the report, then open the test questions at the bottom in ChatGPT. They are written for your brand and category, so you can see whether it names you.
Which AI platforms can I check?
The report shows a score for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. They are estimates from the public sources each one relies on, not answers from the assistants. The test questions open directly in each assistant so you can confirm, and PilotDeck tracks them automatically in the full product.
Why do I see different answers each time I ask?
Assistants generate answers fresh, and they use different sources and settings. That is why this report scores the sources behind the answers, and why you should repeat the test questions a few times.
Why is my brand not showing in AI answers?
Common causes are blocked crawlers, content that only appears after JavaScript runs, a lack of third-party mentions, an unclear brand identity, or simply being new.
How can I improve my AI search visibility?
Let answer crawlers in, say clearly what you do, add Organization markup, publish pages that answer buyer questions directly, earn mentions on trusted third-party sites and keep your information consistent everywhere.
Does robots.txt affect whether AI can mention me?
Yes. If a crawler is blocked it cannot fetch your pages to cite them. Blocking training crawlers is a separate choice from blocking answer crawlers.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No. Major assistants have not confirmed they use it. It is a cheap extra that may help.
Why does the tool not ask ChatGPT directly?
Asking an assistant on your behalf needs a paid API key from its provider. To keep this tool free and keyless, it estimates each assistant's score from the public sources it relies on, and gives you ready-made questions to ask the assistants yourself.
Does my data leave my browser?
Your brand name is sent to public services such as Wikipedia, a news index and Hacker News to look up coverage, and your website is fetched to check it. We do not store anything.
Turn AI visibility into measurable growth
PilotDeck asks the assistants for you every week, shows who gets named instead of you and tells you which pages to publish next.
