What is an SEO title checker?
An SEO title checker tests the title tag of a page against the things that decide how it ranks and how it looks in search: its length in characters and pixels, where the target keyword sits, whether it gives people a reason to click, and whether Google is likely to shorten or rewrite it.
This checker also looks at how clearly the title states what the page answers. That matters for classic results and for answer engines such as Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT, which rely on clear signals about what a page covers.
How to use the SEO title checker
Four steps. The first result takes a few seconds.
- Paste your title. Use the title tag text from your CMS or the SEO title field in your plugin, whether the page is live or still a draft.
- Add your target keyword and brand. Both are optional. The keyword unlocks placement checks and the brand unlocks the suffix check.
- Read the ruler and the preview. The ruler shows how wide the title is against the ~580px desktop limit. The previews show where it would be cut.
- Fix the top issues. Work down "Fix these first". To pick between drafts, switch to "Compare variants" and test three to five at once.
Run it before you publish a new page, and again on existing pages whose clicks have dropped. Titles are quick to change and often the cheapest fix on the page.
What the checker scores
The score is out of 100 and adjusts when you leave the keyword or brand empty, so you are never marked down for something you did not ask it to check.
| Check | What it looks at | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel width | Measured width against the ~580px desktop limit, so you see where Google would cut the title. | 15 |
| Character count | A quick length guide of roughly 30 to 60 characters. Pixels decide, characters guide. | 10 |
| Keyword presence | Whether the exact target keyword appears in the title. | 15 |
| Keyword position | Whether the keyword appears early, before mobile and desktop truncation. | 10 |
| Click signals | Numbers, years, brackets, power words and question or how-to framing. | 20 |
| Brand placement | Whether the brand supports the title at the end instead of taking the first words. | 5 |
| Clean structure | Repeated words, all-caps words, too many separators and stray punctuation. | 10 |
| Answer clarity | Whether the title names a topic, uses an answer-style frame and adds a specific qualifier. | 15 |
SEO title length: characters vs pixels
Google does not publish a character limit for titles. It shortens a title when it no longer fits the space available, and that space is measured in pixels. A title full of narrow letters such as "i" and "l" fits more characters than one full of wide letters such as "W" and "M", which is why a fixed character count is only a rough guide.
| Where the title shows | Safe target | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Google results on desktop | Up to about 580px, usually 50 to 60 characters | The ~580px figure is an industry estimate, not an official Google number. Treat it as a guide. |
| Google results on mobile | Key words in the first 40 characters or so | Mobile can wrap onto a second line, so front-load the topic. |
| Browser tab | First few words | Tabs show very little, so the topic should come first. |
Shorter is not always better. A title that uses the available width to add a number, audience or year often earns more clicks than a bare keyword.
How to write an SEO title that gets clicks
- Lead with the topic. Put the main keyword in the first few words, then add the angle.
- Add one specific detail. A number, year, audience or outcome tells people why this result is different.
- Use brackets or a power word sparingly. One is enough, such as [Checklist], "Free" or "Step-by-Step".
- Say what the page delivers. Match the title to the page and to the searcher's intent, or Google may swap it.
- Make every title unique. The same title on many pages gives Google little reason to keep any of them.
- End with the brand. A short suffix after a pipe or dash builds recognition without costing the best words.

Why Google rewrites titles, and how to keep yours
Google says it may use a different title link than the one you wrote when it thinks another version describes the page better. It documents its approach in Google Search Central's guidance on title links. The patterns below are the common reasons a title gets replaced.
- Too long. The title does not fit, so Google shortens it or picks another source.
- Keyword stuffing. Repeated words and keyword lists look like an attempt to game results.
- Boilerplate. The same title, or only the brand name, is used across many pages.
- Heavy branding. The brand and tagline take up space the topic needs.
- Mismatch. The title does not match the page's main heading or the query's intent.
If your title was already rewritten, paste the original into the checker, fix the flagged items, and compare the result with what Google now shows. Changes can take time to appear after a re-crawl.
Titles and AI answers: AI Overviews and ChatGPT
Answer engines have to decide quickly what a page is about. Your title is one of the clearest signals they have. A title that names the topic, says what kind of answer follows and adds a specific qualifier is easier to match to a question than a list of keywords.
The "Answer clarity" check looks for exactly these things:
- A clear topic phrase, ideally your target keyword.
- An answer-style frame such as a guide, how-to, comparison or list.
- A specific qualifier such as a number, year or audience.
- No keyword-list formatting with many separators.
This is a best-practice check, not a guarantee. No title can promise a citation in an AI answer, and the content on the page still has to deliver what the title says.
SEO title vs meta title vs H1
These terms get mixed up. "Meta title" is another name for the SEO title, which is the title tag in the page's HTML. The H1 is a separate element.
| Element | Where people see it | Job |
|---|---|---|
| SEO title (title tag, meta title) | Search results and browser tabs | Earn the click and state the topic. |
| H1 | At the top of the page | Orient the reader once they arrive. |
| Meta description | Under the title in search results | Support the click with a short summary. |
Keep the title and H1 consistent in topic, but you do not need them to be identical. Writing them separately lets the title do its click job within the pixel limit.
Using the checker with WordPress, Rank Math and Yoast
Copy the text from the SEO title field in your plugin and paste it into the checker. SEO plugins show their own length meters, and those may count characters or use a different pixel estimate, so use this ruler as a second opinion before you save.
The checker suits bloggers, in-house marketers, freelancers, agencies auditing a client's pages, and ecommerce teams writing product and category titles. For a bigger audit, paste your titles into "Compare variants" in batches of eight and note the ones that fall below a score of 70.
SEO title checker FAQ
What is an SEO title checker?
An SEO title checker tests a page's title tag for length in characters and pixels, keyword placement, click appeal and the chance of being cut off or rewritten in Google results, so you can fix problems before you publish.
What is the ideal SEO title length?
Google truncates titles by pixel width, not by character count. About 580 pixels is a safe target on desktop, which is roughly 50 to 60 characters. On mobile, put the most important words in the first 40 characters or so.
Why does Google rewrite my page title?
Google may replace a title that is too long, stuffed with keywords, overloaded with brand names, identical across many pages, or that does not match the page content or the searcher's intent. Clear, specific, unique titles are more likely to be kept.
Should the brand name go at the start or end of the title?
For most pages, put the brand at the end after a pipe or dash so the first words carry the topic. Put the brand first only when people are searching for the brand itself, such as on a homepage.
Does my title affect whether AI answers cite my page?
A title is one of the clearest signals of what a page covers. A plain, specific title that states the topic and the type of answer is easier for search and answer engines to match to a question. Nobody can guarantee a citation.
What is the difference between an SEO title and an H1?
The SEO title (title tag) appears in search results and browser tabs. The H1 is the main heading visitors see on the page. They can be similar, but the title is written to earn the click and the H1 to orient the reader.
Can I use this with WordPress, Rank Math or Yoast?
Yes. Paste the text from the SEO title field of your plugin into the checker. Plugin meters often count characters or use their own pixel estimates, so use this tool's ruler as a second opinion.
Is this SEO title checker free?
Yes. It is free to use as often as you like, with no signup. Titles are checked in your browser and are not sent to a server.
