What is an llms.txt generator?
An llms.txt generator is a tool that writes your llms.txt for you. The file is a short Markdown page that lives at the top level of your domain. Its job is to introduce your site to an AI system in a few lines and then list the pages that explain your business best.
The idea was put forward at llmstxt.org. Think of it as a hand-written welcome note for machines. Your normal pages are busy with menus, scripts and banners. This file skips all that and says: here is who we are, and here are the pages to read.
Writing one by hand is fine for a five-page site and slow for a large one. A generator does the repetitive part. It finds your pages, sorts them into sections and drafts the lines, so you only spend time on wording.
Keep expectations realistic. llms.txt is a community proposal, not a ratified web standard, and AI providers have not all agreed to use it. Treat it as a cheap extra, not a ranking lever.
How to generate an llms.txt file
You can have a first draft in about a minute.
- Enter your home page URL. Use your main address, for example
https://yoursite.com. - Click Generate llms.txt. The tool finds your sitemap, reads your key pages and groups them into sections such as Docs, Blog and Product.
- Review the file. Skim the names and notes, and edit anything you want to reword after you copy it.
- Copy or download it. Save it as
llms.txt. - Upload it to your site's root folder and open
yoursite.com/llms.txtto confirm it shows plain text.
If the tool can't reach your site, it shows a box where you can paste your sitemap instead, and builds the file from that.
What a valid llms.txt file contains
The format is ordinary Markdown in a set order. Only the title is mandatory, yet the rest is what makes the file worth reading.
| Part | How it looks | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Title | # Site name | Required. Names the site or project. |
| Summary | > Short description | A quoted line that says what the site is. |
| Context | Plain paragraphs | Notes that help a model interpret the links, such as versioning. |
| Sections | ## Docs | Headings that group related links. |
| Links | - [Title](url): note | One page per line with a full address and a short explanation. |
| Optional block | ## Optional | Lower-priority pages a model can skip when space is tight. |
A small example
# Northwind Bikes > Northwind Bikes sells city and touring bicycles online and runs repair workshops in Leeds. Prices on product pages are in GBP and include VAT. ## Shop - [City bikes](https://northwind.example/bikes/city): Commuter models with sizing advice - [Delivery and returns](https://northwind.example/help/delivery): Costs, timings and the 30-day return rule ## Guides - [Choosing a frame size](https://northwind.example/guides/frame-size): Height chart and fit tips ## Optional - [Privacy policy](https://northwind.example/privacy)
llms.txt vs llms-full.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml
These four files sit side by side at the root of a site, and each does a different job.
| File | Written for | Role | Controls access? |
|---|---|---|---|
llms.txt | AI systems | A short guide to your best pages, with notes | No |
llms-full.txt | AI systems | The full text of those pages in one document | No |
robots.txt | Every crawler | States which paths may be fetched | Yes, by request |
sitemap.xml | Search engines | Lists all indexable URLs | No |
Use robots.txt for permissions, the sitemap for discovery and llms.txt for explanation. Before you publish, it is worth confirming that AI crawlers can actually reach the pages you list. The robots.txt checker shows that in one run.
Do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity use llms.txt?
There is no dependable yes. The large AI providers have not published a firm promise that this file changes how they crawl, rank or cite a site. A number of developer tools, documentation platforms and agents do read it, so the file has real readers, just not guaranteed ones.
That makes it a small, low-risk bet. If drafting it costs you an hour, publish it and keep it accurate. Then spend your serious effort on the things AI answers demonstrably draw on today: clear pages, specific facts, crawlable content and mentions from sources people trust. Vendors change behaviour often, so check their current documentation.
Who benefits most from an llms.txt file
Documentation teams
Point coding assistants to the quickstart, API reference and release notes instead of leaving them to wander your navigation.
SaaS companies
Give models an accurate account of your product, plans and integrations so descriptions of you stay correct.
Online stores
Surface delivery, returns and top category pages so shopping assistants find your policies without crawling every product.
Publishers
Highlight your cornerstone guides and original research, and leave archives and tag pages out of the main list.
Agencies
Draft a file per client in minutes and refine the notes by hand as part of a wider audit.
AI builders
Use the list as a map of source pages when assembling a custom GPT or a retrieval pipeline over your own content.
Where to upload your llms.txt file
Publish it in the top-level folder of your host so it answers at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. After uploading, open that address in a browser and confirm it appears as plain text. A subdomain such as docs.yourdomain.com needs a copy of its own.
- WordPressPlace a real
llms.txtin the site's root folder through SFTP or your host's file manager, or use an SEO plugin that supports it. - ShopifyRoot files can't be uploaded, so route
/llms.txtto a page or app that returns the text. - Webflow and FramerUse a custom route or a reverse proxy that serves the file at the root path.
- Next.jsDrop it into
public/llms.txt, or add a route that returns text. - Plain static hostingPut it in the published folder beside your
robots.txt.
Common llms.txt mistakes
Pasting the entire sitemap
The value is in the selection. Hundreds of bare links with no notes is only a weaker sitemap. List the pages you would hand to a new colleague on day one.
Using relative links
An entry like /pricing means nothing to a model that doesn't know your domain. Write full https:// addresses that return a normal page.
Writing vague notes
"Learn more" tells a reader nothing. Say what the page holds: prices, steps, definitions or figures.
Listing pages that are closed off
Pages behind a login or blocked in robots.txt waste a slot and send mixed messages.
Expecting it to protect your content
This file can't stop anyone from using your text. Use robots.txt and server rules when you need to control access.
Letting it go stale
Links to removed pages do more harm than having no file. Refresh it whenever your site's main pages change.
llms.txt best practices checklist
- Open with an H1 that matches your brand name exactly.
- Write a summary that a stranger understands on one read.
- Keep the list to roughly 20 to 60 links under clear H2 headings.
- Give every link a note describing what question the page answers.
- Use full
https://addresses that load without errors. - Park legal and archive pages under an Optional heading.
- Serve the file as plain text from the root of the domain.
- Review it after each launch, migration or navigation change.
How often should you update llms.txt?
Whenever your most important pages change. That means a launch, rebrand, migration, new product line or pricing revision. For most sites, a quarterly look is enough. Documentation portals and busy content hubs are better off checking monthly, since outdated links are the usual reason the file stops helping.
A handy habit is to regenerate the file, compare it with the live version and copy over only the changes you agree with.
LLMs.txt generator FAQ
What is an llms.txt file?
It is a Markdown file placed at the root of a domain. It introduces the site to AI systems in a few lines and lists the pages worth reading, each with a link and a short note.
How do I create an llms.txt file?
Enter your home page URL in the generator and click Generate llms.txt. Review the result, then copy or download it. If the tool can't reach your site, paste your sitemap and it builds the file from that.
Where does llms.txt go on my website?
At the top level of the host, so it opens at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Subdomains need their own copy.
Do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read llms.txt?
There is no firm public commitment from the major providers that they use it when crawling or citing. Some developer tools and agents do read it. Check each vendor's documentation for current behaviour.
How is llms.txt different from robots.txt?
robots.txt sets crawl permissions. llms.txt grants or denies nothing; it is a curated reading list that explains your site to a language model.
What is llms-full.txt?
An optional companion that holds the full text of your key pages in one Markdown document, while llms.txt only carries titles, links and short notes.
Will llms.txt improve my rankings?
There is no evidence that it improves Google rankings or guarantees citations in AI answers. Use it as a low-cost addition to a wider GEO effort.
Is llms.txt the same as a sitemap?
No. A sitemap lists every indexable URL for search engines. llms.txt is a short, hand-picked list with explanations, written for language models.
How often should llms.txt be updated?
After any launch, migration, navigation change or retired page. Quarterly suits most sites, monthly suits documentation and busy content hubs.
Is this generator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no signup and has no usage cap.
