Free Meta Description Length Checker
Use this free meta description checker to see how long your description really is, in characters and in pixels, and preview where Google may cut it on desktop and mobile. Enter any live page address to test it. No signup.
We read the live page and pull out its title and meta description tag.
To read a live page, your browser asks the site directly; if the site blocks that, the request goes through a public relay and the page’s HTML passes through it. Pixel widths are estimates based on Arial at 14 px, so treat them as a close guide, not a guarantee.

What is a meta description checker?
A meta description checker reads the short summary stored in a page’s <meta name="description"> tag and shows whether it will display properly in search results. This meta description length checker counts the characters, measures the width the text will occupy on screen, and shows roughly where a search engine would stop and add an ellipsis.
Width matters more than character count. A line full of w and m takes far more room than a line of i and l, so two descriptions of identical length can be cut in different places. That is why a good meta description tool reports both numbers, and why this one draws a preview for desktop and mobile separately.
It works as a meta description counter too, showing characters, words and pixels together, so the meta description word count is never a guess. Beyond length, it tests whether your focus keyword appears early, whether the copy invites a click, and whether words repeat too often.
What is a meta description?
It is a one- or two-sentence summary of a page, written in the HTML head and invisible on the page itself. Search engines often show it beneath your link, and social platforms can reuse it in link previews, so it works as the short pitch that decides whether someone opens your page.
Why it is worth checking
A description does not change where you rank, but it changes how often people choose you once you appear. A sentence cut off mid-thought, or a generic one that could describe any page, quietly costs clicks. It is also one of the few places where you control your own wording in search results.
Who uses a meta description checker
- SEO specialists and agencies verify pages before a client sign-off or after a migration.
- Content marketers and bloggers run a final test right after publishing.
- Founders and small business owners fix their own pages without hiring anyone.
- Developers confirm that templates output the tag at a sensible length.
How to check your meta description
Your first result takes a few seconds.
- Enter your page URL. Type the address of any live page and the checker reads its description tag, so you can check the meta description of a live page in one step.
- Add your focus keywords. Optional, but it unlocks the keyword placement checks. Enter the phrases you want the page to be found for.
- Run the check. To check meta description length and quality in one go, you get a score, the exact count, a desktop and a mobile preview, and a pass or fix note for every test.
- Read the cut-off box. Any text that would be hidden is highlighted so you can see what readers will miss.
- Edit and re-test. Tighten the wording and check again until both previews show your full message, then copy the tag into your page.
What the meta description tester checks
This meta description tester labels every test as pass, needs work, or fix now, with a short note on what to change.
| Test | What it looks at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Presence | Whether a description exists, and whether a live page declares more than one | Without one, search engines write their own; with two, it is unclear which they will trust. |
| Character length | Total characters against the 120–158 target range | This is the meta description character limit most teams plan around. Too short wastes space; too long gets trimmed. |
| Desktop pixel width | Estimated width against a 920 px limit | Width, not character count, decides where the snippet is cut. |
| Mobile pixel width | Estimated width against a 680 px limit | Most searches happen on phones, where less text is shown. |
| Word count | Words in the description alongside characters | A quick sense of density and whether the sentence is overloaded. |
| Keyword placement | Whether each focus keyword appears, and whether it lands in the first 120 characters | Searchers’ terms are emphasised in results, which helps your listing stand out. |
| Call to action | Action wording such as learn, compare, try or get | A clear next step gives people a reason to choose your result. |
| Repetition | Words used three or more times | Repeating terms reads like keyword stuffing. |
| Formatting | HTML tags, line breaks, double spaces and shouting in capitals | Stray markup and odd spacing can show up in the snippet. |
| Snippet controls (URL mode) | Robots directives such as nosnippet and max-snippet | These can override your description entirely. |
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for 120 to 158 characters. Google does not publish a meta description limit and trims snippets to fit the available width, so the figures below are the working estimates most SEO teams use for planning. Think of this range as the ideal meta description length for 2026.
| Where it appears | Approx. width | Approx. characters | Practical advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop results | About 920 px | Up to roughly 158 | The maximum meta description length to stay under so nothing is cut. |
| Mobile results | About 680 px | Roughly 120 | Open with your strongest point. |
How many characters in a meta description?
For most pages, between 120 and 158. People often ask for the character limit for SEO meta description as if it were one fixed number, but the meta description max length is really a width limit, which is why the same count can fit on one page and be cut on another. Check meta description length in pixels as well as characters and you will rarely be surprised by a trimmed snippet.
Why you keep seeing different limits
Snippets stretched to roughly 300 characters in late 2017 and went back to about 160 the following year, and tools updated at different speeds. Some count characters, some measure pixels, and figures like 155, 158, 160 and 920 px are all approximations of the same width. Trust the pixel measurement and treat the character range as a guide.
What if it is shorter than 70 characters?
A very short description is not penalised, but it leaves space unused and gives searchers little reason to pick you over the next result. Google may also swap it for text from the page. Use the extra room for a specific benefit or detail.
Front-load what matters
Because phones show less, treat the first 120 characters as the part everybody sees. Put the topic and the main benefit there, and keep any closing prompt as a bonus. A snippet that makes its point in 130 characters beats one that stretches to the limit and loses its ending to an ellipsis.
How to write a meta description that earns the click
- Describe the page honestly. If the snippet promises something the page does not deliver, visitors leave quickly and Google is more likely to rewrite it.
- Lead with the keyword, naturally. Using the phrase searchers typed near the start helps them see the match.
- Say something specific. A number, a timeframe, a price range or a named feature beats a general claim.
- Use an active verb. Words like compare, build, fix or download tell readers what they can do on arrival.
- Write one for every page. Reused descriptions make different pages look the same in results.
- Respect your SEO description length. Write inside the target range, then confirm it with the meta description checker once the page is live.
A simple formula
Topic, then a specific benefit, then one piece of proof or detail, then a next step. You rarely need all four, but a description with none of them reads as filler.
Examples by page type
Each example below sits inside the ideal meta description length range. Swap in your own details rather than copying the wording.

Common meta description mistakes and how to fix them
Length problems are covered above, so here are the other ways a description goes wrong.
Missing descriptions
A blank tag hands the decision to the search engine, which pulls a fragment from your page that may not be the one you would choose. Write a summary for every page you want people to find.
Duplicate descriptions across pages
Template-driven sites often reuse one description sitewide. Give each important page its own, and for large catalogues build a pattern that pulls in the product or category name.
Keyword stuffing
Listing the same phrase several times looks spammy to people. Use the main phrase once and a close variation if it reads naturally.
Copying the opening of the page
When the description repeats the first line of the page, the result looks thin. Use the description to add the detail the headline had no room for.
Unescaped quotation marks
A straight double quote inside the content attribute can end the tag early. Use single quotes, curly quotes, or the " entity.
Why Google shows a different meta description
Google builds snippets automatically. Its Search Central documentation explains that it may use your tag or text from the page, whichever it judges describes the page better for that particular search. So one page can show different snippets for different queries, and that is normal.
Common reasons your description gets replaced
- The description is missing, or so short it says almost nothing.
- It does not match what the searcher actually typed.
- The same text appears on many pages.
- It reads like an advert or a list of keywords.
- The page body answers the query more directly than the tag does.
What you can do about it
Write each description around the page’s main topic and the question it answers best. Check meta description tags on the live page to confirm the one you wrote is the one being served, and stay inside the meta description limit so the useful part is not trimmed. You cannot force a particular snippet, so aim to make yours the most relevant option.
Does it matter for AI search?
AI answer engines mostly build responses from the content of the page itself. A clear description helps by stating the page’s topic plainly, but there is no guarantee any system will use it, so treat it as one useful signal rather than a lever.
When you want no snippet at all
Robots directives such as nosnippet and max-snippet stop or shorten snippets. If you did not set them on purpose, the checker’s URL mode will flag them.
Where to find and edit your meta description
The tag lives in the <head> of each page. Most platforms give you a field for it, and once you have edited it, run it through the meta description checker again to confirm the live page shows the new text.
- WordPressEdit it in your SEO plugin’s snippet panel below the post editor.
- ShopifyOpen the page, product or collection and edit the search engine listing.
- WebflowSet it in the page settings under SEO, or bind it to a CMS field.
- Next.jsExport a
metadataobject with adescriptionvalue from the page. - Static HTMLAdd the tag directly inside the page’s
<head>section. - AI site buildersGenerated sites often ship with placeholder copy, so check the live meta description once after launch.
When to run a meta description check
- Right after publishing a new post, landing page or product page.
- After a redesign or migration, when templates can quietly overwrite your descriptions.
- When a page’s click-through rate falls despite a steady ranking position.
- After a CMS or plugin update that changes how tags are generated.
- During a content refresh, when a page’s focus keyword or angle has changed. Run the meta desc checker again so the description still matches.
One page or the whole site?
This meta description tool checks one page at a time, which suits spot checks. A site with hundreds of pages needs a crawl that flags every missing, duplicate and over-length description in one pass, then keeps watching for changes. That is what PilotDeck’s site audit does, and you can start a free trial to run it on your own domain.
Meta description checker FAQ
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for 120 to 158 characters. Google has no fixed character limit, because it cuts snippets by pixel width: roughly 920 pixels on desktop and 680 on mobile. Put the most important words in the first 120 characters so they survive on every device.
What is the ideal meta description length in 2026?
The same range still works: 120 to 158 characters, with the key message in the first 120. Google does not publish an official figure, so confirm the result in pixels with a meta description length checker rather than relying on a single number.
What happens if the meta description is below 70 characters?
Nothing is penalised, but a very short description wastes space and gives searchers little to go on. Google may also replace it with text from the page. Use the room for a specific benefit or detail.
How many characters can a meta description have? Is 160 the limit?
Around 158 to 160 is a handy rule of thumb, not a hard limit. Wide letters take more room than narrow ones, so the same count can fit on one page and be cut on another. Anything beyond the limit is shortened with an ellipsis, not penalised.
How do I check the meta description of a website?
Enter the page address in the checker above and it reads the description tag from the live page. You can also open the page source and search for name="description".
Is the meta description a ranking factor?
No. Google has said descriptions do not directly affect rankings. They shape how your result looks and whether people click it, which can still change how much traffic a ranking position earns.
Does Google always show my meta description?
No. It may swap in text from the page when that answers the query better. The section above lists the usual reasons and how to reduce the chances.
Do meta descriptions matter for AI search?
They can help by stating a page’s topic clearly, but AI answer engines mostly draw on the page’s own content and no system is guaranteed to use the tag. Write it for people first.
