30+ Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Statistics & Trends 2026

GEO IN NUMBERS2023202420252026AI search visibility keeps climbing

The SEO industry has gone through countless changes over the past couple of years. The latest, and arguably the biggest, is the rise of AI search.

It has changed the way we think about search. The question used to be, "How do I rank?" Now it's increasingly, "How do I get cited by AI?"

And it turns out there are things you can do to influence that. A peer-reviewed study from Princeton and Georgia Tech found that certain GEO techniques can increase a page's visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40%.

That's one reason ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews are no longer something marketing teams can treat as a side channel.

We pulled together 31 GEO statistics from 13 independently verified sources to see what the data actually says about AI search, citations, visibility, traffic, and where GEO is heading in 2026.

GEO Market Size Statistics

The GEO market is still small in absolute terms but scaling fast, against a backdrop where traditional search volume itself is forecast to shrink.

  1. The global GEO market was valued at $848 million in 2025.
  2. It's projected to reach $33.7 billion by 2034, a 50.5% CAGR.
  3. Gartner forecasts that traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots absorb query share.

Zero-Click Search Statistics

Zero-click search has moved from a minority pattern to the dominant outcome for most queries, and the rate of change has accelerated rather than leveled off.

4. About 80% of consumers rely on "zero-click" AI results in at least 40% of their searches.
5. Roughly 60% of all US Google searches end without a click to another site.
6. By early 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without any click at all, up from 60.45% in 2024.
7. Even so, Google AI Mode accounted for only 0.34% of searches from January–April 2026, showing the broader zero-click trend is not yet primarily driven by AI Mode itself.
8. Organic click-through rate on queries with an AI Overview fell from 1.76% to 0.61%, a 61% drop, between June 2024 and September 2025.
9. Even queries without an AI Overview saw a 41% CTR decline over the same period.
10. Brands cited inside an AI Overview earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than uncited brands on the same query.

Google AI Summary Behavior Statistics (Pew Research)

Independent, non-industry research confirms the same pattern Google's own critics have been describing, with granular behavioral data.

  1. 58% of US adults conducted at least one Google search in March 2025 that produced an AI-generated summary.
  2. Users clicked a traditional search result link in just 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it didn't.
  3. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in just 1% of visits.
  4. Searchers ended their browsing session entirely on 26% of pages with an AI summary, versus 16% of pages without one.
  5. Overall, 18% of all Google searches in the study produced an AI summary, rising to 53% for searches of 10+ words.

AI Platform Scale Statistics

Google's and OpenAI's own disclosures now put the leading AI search surfaces at nine- and ten-figure user counts.

  1. Google AI Mode surpassed 1 billion monthly users one year after launch, with queries "more than doubling every quarter" since.
  2. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users in February 2026, up from 800 million the previous October.
  3. OpenAI also reported 50 million paying ChatGPT subscribers as of the same month.
  4. Within the Computer & Electronics industry vertical, ClaudeBot and Meta-ExternalAgent each accounted for a 13.9% share of AI crawler traffic.

Brand Mention and Citation Statistics

AI models learn brand credibility primarily from text mentions, not backlinks, and most PR programs are targeting the wrong journalists for that reality.

  1. Across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlate at 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, versus just 0.218 for backlinks.
  2. Brands in the top mention quartile earn over 10x more AI Overview mentions than the next quartile down.
  3. 82% of AI citations come from earned media, not owned or paid content, across more than one million citations analyzed.
  4. Only 2% overlap exists between the journalists PR teams pitch and the journalists AI models actually cite for a given brand.

GEO Tactics That Move AI Visibility

The strongest evidence on which content changes actually work comes from one peer-reviewed study, tested across 10,000 queries and 10 search engines.

  1. GEO techniques can lift content visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% overall.
  2. Adding statistics to a page was the single strongest lever tested, improving visibility by 41%.
  3. Adding quotations improved visibility by 27.2%.
  4. Citing external sources lifted visibility by up to 115% for lower-ranked pages specifically, with minimal effect on already-dominant pages.
  5. Keyword stuffing performed worse than making no changes at all.

Commercial Impact Statistics (AI-Referred Traffic)

AI-referred shoppers are not just growing in volume — they convert measurably better than other traffic sources.

  1. AI-driven traffic to US retail sites jumped 693% year-over-year during the 2025 holiday season.
  2. AI referrals converted 31% higher than other traffic sources, nearly double the gap seen a year earlier.
  3. AI-driven conversions were 54% higher on Thanksgiving and 38% higher on Black Friday than non-AI traffic.

Key Takeaways

  • Zero-click search keeps accelerating: from 60.45% (2024) to 68.01% (2026) of all US Google searches, independently confirmed by both SparkToro/Similarweb and Pew Research using different methodologies.
  • Being cited inside an AI Overview is worth a measurable premium — 35–91% more clicks — even as overall CTR craters.
  • Adding statistics and citing sources are the two highest-leverage GEO tactics with peer-reviewed backing; keyword stuffing actively hurts.
  • Brand mentions beat backlinks 3-to-1 as a predictor of AI visibility, and 82% of what AI cites is earned media, not owned content.
  • AI-referred commercial traffic is growing exponentially and converting meaningfully better than other channels.
